I so wanted to love this book, but it just didn't quite tick all my boxes. Firstly it was plain and simple too long- things were too drawn out and points made over and over and then perhaps reiterated once again! And secondly it was just too militant for me in places. To be honest I enjoyed opposing Anna in parts - a brilliant book for stimulating discussion! - but overall it was pretty OK, not quite as spectacular as I had hoped. eta: I only just, two years after reading, noticed the similarity between Wulf and Woolf... coincidence?
The writing in this book is stunning, which is entirely consistent with Geraldine Brooks. And the story was beautifully told. I would actually give it 4 & 1/2 stars. You have to read a Geraldine Brooks book slowly, in order to enjoy every single sentence. Loved it.
