This is an extremely good book from Tom Clancy. Much of Clancy's work is historical or documentary type writing, but this is action packed.
Overall, I liked this book. It showed the many complex layers of humanity and all the struggles we face. The characters try to do the right things, stand by their beliefs, be a good person, be better than their faults and mistakes. It shows them faltering, trying, searching, basically being human. I liked how the Ruth struggled to teach a curriculum that she had to adhere to while including her own ideas. I enjoyed Tim's struggles with his addiction, his marriage, his relationship with his daughter, and his religion. It made him much more human that many of the uber-Christians we see in pop culture. The only part I didn't like was the end. I felt it was a bit of a cop out. If this was the ending for a movie, I'd want my money back. There are too many things left open and unfinished. There are relationships that need to be repaired and restarted. The novel emulates life in the sense that there's never really a clear cut end save maybe death. This novel ends with many of the problems it presents as unresolved or at least not properly dealt with. Sure we can make up our own ending but that's not nearly as satisfying. It has all this dramatic buildup and then just stops. It was like a 300+ page tease. Maybe I'm ranting because I finished it a few minutes ago but I imagine I'll feel more or less the same next week. In short, the overall story was good. Very compelling and true to life. The end was a disappointment.
