Gerald Samper, British ex-pat in Tuscany, was introduced in COOKING WITH FERNET BRANCA and continues his witty, outrageous doings here. The characters are over the top and very funny as they solve problems. The loss of his house to an earthquake leads Samper to agree that Princess Di appeared and saved everyone in the doomed house. It becomes zanier thereafter.
Wow. That was something else. Besides Rage Horsemen of the Apocalypse 2, I don't think I have read any books dealing with severe real life issues. So to make a jump from Paranormal YA fiction to this is pretty big. But I loved it. Alex is a very realistic characters, one of those people who could exist. What was going through her head throughout the book is what I imagine someone who really was in that situation would think. And Brown tells you why Alex did what she did, so it didn't leave you wondering "Um... Why the heck didn't she tell Bethany?" or something like that. My one thing about it though is Zack. When Alex finds out that he's been defending her from Cole and trying to protect her, can't she at least thank him? But no, instead she has a rampage outburst at his house. That annoyed me. Zack almost got arrested for her and she doesn't. even. care. Otherwise, this was really good.
