It’s been a decade since the armistice, but is the “Great War” really over? Sorry, love. Maisie Dobbs, private investigator, helps her clients cope with heartache, loneliness, and loss, all in the aftermath of World War I. Even when there’s murder involved, it’s always in the context of psyches damaged by the war. In flashbacks, we learn of Maisie’s lonely childhood, her employment as a house maid, her university education at Cambridge, and how she came to serve as a wartime nurse. We learn that she had a “sweetheart,” and we suspect that he, too, was a casualty of the war. In fact, Maisie is one of several hundred thousand British women who were single after the war, and remained single, because so few men came home alive. She turns to the excitement and challenge of detective work, under the guidance of her mentor, Maurice. As she delves deep into the heartaches of others, can she possibly heal her own wounded soul?
