The author states that he was inspired by The Great Gatsby when crafting The Gold Coast, a story of wealth and privilege on the north shore of Long Island, and changes to that society in the 80's and 90's as the old families died out or moved away, unable to support the life styles of the Gilded Age, before U.S. income taxes had a major impact on the creation and preserving of family wealth. The protagonist, John Whitman Sutter, a graduate of Yale and Yale Law School and a Wall Street tax lawyer, comes from a distinguished, but not wealthy, family in the area. His wife, Susan Stanhope Sutter, comes from a much wealthier family; they live on a 10 acre carve out of her family's estate, and Susan has a significant income from the family trust. Their children will come into a sizeable chunk of the family trust in the future. At this point their older daughter is attending Yale, and their son will matriculate to Smith College at the end of the summer. That summer, the family and society around them suffers from significant upheavals as John becomes somewhat disengaged from his career and life in general, and a New York Mafia boss buys an adjoining estate and seeks to become an integral part of the neighborhood. The neighbors are shocked, of course, as John and Susan interact with their new neighbor. No spoilers here
