I ended up having just three days (work days, no less) to read this book prior to book club. Amazingly, I was able to do it! For the subject matter (racism, medical ethics, history of scientific research in America over the past 50 years, etc.) it was an amazingly fast and engaging read. Author Skloot evidently spend a good decade unraveling and writing this story, but she has distilled it down to an elegant and clear tale, that I believe would be accessible to even those with little science background. The bones of the story are fascinating, but the human interest piece of this nonfiction book was what pulled me from chapter to chapter. I became really involved in the family of Henrietta Lacks, and am actually left feeling like I want to know more about them and how they are doing. I can't do justice to this book in a few sentences, so just take my advice: read it.
