I read this book over the course of 4 of my quick commutes to work. Although I spent very little time with it overall, it is not quickly forgettable. The characters are uniquely drawn and I was able to easily picture them all. I do wish, however, that I'd had the copy shown here, instead of one with a still from the movie on the cover, because I'd rather have the actual painting in my head than an image of Scarlett Johanssen. That's not to say that I don't like Scarlett (Lost in Translation = love), but I would really liked to have been able to reference the actual painting while reading. I can't think of any other books I've read about the 17th century Dutch, so I enjoyed it from that perspective. I find historical novels to be one of the best ways to learn about the past and now I want to learn more about that time period. Maybe there are some more paintings with stories behind them? Definitely recommended for anyone. Even if you don't like it very much, you'll be done with it before you know it anyway. Could easily be read in single sitting.
