After reading a few short stories by Ursula K. LeGuin (I highly recommend "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas"), I tried her novel "The Left Hand of Darkness". It has a great plot premise: a society of people who are literally androgynous most of the time, but turn male or female on occasion when they go into "kemmer" (kind of like going into heat). Unfortunately, I was unimpressed with the book, which had boring characters and not much of a plot. I also felt like she didn't even take full advantage of her incredibly fascinating plot premise. Try her short stories instead!
