The book was well written and the story was interesting. But in the end I felt absolutely no sympathy towards Christopher McCandless. If that was the goal of the book it failed. Despite the fact that Jon Krakauer's tone tends toward the sympathetic, I think his goal was to simply give an insight into what Christopher may have been thinking rather than to justify his actions. In that he succeeded. But, I despised the Christopher McCandless character for what he did to his family and for being lifted up as some sort of demigod, when really he was just a stupid kid that couldn't spend 2 hours at a library learning that you air dry fresh caught meat in Alaska, you don't smoke it.
