It's about the Women's Airforce Service Pilots in WWII, One Drop Rule and Jim Crow laws racism, sexism in the military, and even touches upon other kinds of prejudice like anti-Semitism. The issues around passing as white were deft, and complex. The protagonist felt life-sized, and was easy to root for.
