Just scanned this library copy, but will be buying a copy to read with my son. An interesting cross between a book of historical craft, and Little House on the Prairie (but without the smarm). I particularly like the drawings and discussion of how men and women actually built things a century and a half ago, and how ideas were shared. E.g., Sloane combines a little history of the covered bridge with the design and construction of a small, hand-hewn, timber bridge. The book deepens my appreciation for the everyday engineering and craft that were once part of everyday life.
