In this last book in the Uglies series, Specials by Scott Westerfeld, Tally had surgery and became a Special, a kind of superhuman who has been designed to protect the way of society. Throughout this book, Tally and the other Specials work both within the town and the larger world to keep the Smokies, or wilderness people, from giving Pretties pills that allow them to think well and for themselves. Tally is also having an internal battle with the cruelty that’s been instilled in her as a Special, while still avoiding being converted back to normal by Dr. Cable and the government. This book takes you on a wild ride, similar to the first two in the series, but you shouldn’t attempt to read it without first reading Uglies and Pretties. Tally’s character is most likeable as an Ugly in the first book because it is before her surgeries and she is the most real. By the end of the series, she is hard to relate to, which is frustrating, but an interesting challenge as a reader. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to people who like high action novels that tackle the same issues we have to deal with—like identity and love- but in a unique way.
