Another strong offering, Chamber of Secrets starts what is in all honesty Rowling's best feature as an author: maturing the series. Sure, it's at heart young adult, but the way she ages the series, giving stronger weight to less of the public service cheeriness and friendship and more to a world being torn apart, is very impressive. It would be like if, nowadays, Mario became a noir thriller about a chain-smoking hero pining to save his lost love from her mob-boss brother. Well, maybe that wouldn't be so great, but aging the novels with the audience is not a terrible thing. It's got a good arc and interesting peril.
An interesting study of characters in a small town in Vermont. It's hard to identify with Harper as he mourns his one and only love from childhood and is raising his daughter. A story of past and present and the ties that bind people.
