This is the story of Andras Levi, a young Hungarian Jew who has departed Hungary before WWII to study architecture in Paris. It follows him in life as he falls in love, leaves Paris around the war and through his misery in the Labour Camps of Hungary and The Ukraine. A really touching story that is beautifully written and easy to follow....a real tear jerker at times! I enjoyed how the stories of his friends and family also entwined with his. Interesting to find out that the story is also based on the author's own family stories and most likely her Grandfather's experiences.
As a Greek, specifically a Greek of Cephalonian descent, my love for this book may be baiased. I love the detail the author goes into when describing the Greek culture, as well of the specifics of the impact WWII had on Greeks and Italians, and how people can ignore the fact that society tells them to hate certain people, in favor of kinship and love.
