Nicely written story of a girl, Rachel, who contracts leprosy at the age of seven years, and like others in her same condition in Hawaii (at the time), she is taken from her family and all she's ever known to be banished to the island of Moloka'i. The story of this community of people with leprosy and how they live their lives in the face of death is heartwrenching and sad, but also heartwarming. It is a work of fiction, however it is a story based on information gathered about those poor, sick people who actually lived there. You can't help but root for Rachel - feeling her anger & frustration at the disease itself and the injustices wrought on this community, as well as elation for her as she experiences solid relationships, amazement at the inventions of the early 20th century and of course, love where least expected. Like so many others, it is a book about perseverance and the good that can crop up when least expected, but it's still worth your time.
