I was given this book to read by a friend, and I have to admit that at first I cynically expected another in the "love- conquers- all-Oprahfied- Lifetime -Movie " genre. Happily I was proven wrong. This is a true story that takes place in the American South during World War II, when German U-boats patrolled the Gulf waters (a detail I did not know). I don't want to spoil it for any prospective reader but the way the story is told and the depiction of life in a small Southern seaside town during the war is extremely effective. Two people from widely disparate backgrounds meeting during wartime could have made for a horrendously cliched backstory but in this case it worked.
