Deeply thought provoking, highly provocative, incredibly intelligent and just a little too real. One of the classic dystopian novels, this book has become famous for a reason. It paints a picture of an entire society that functions as a cult letting the system think for them. Anyone who is too smart or too free-thinking is gotten rid of. Only those who are constantly on guard and stupid enough to never wish to think too much are guaranteed survival. You can see from closely watching Winston that his life must be completely controlled at all times. He is always careful to make the right sounds or always have the right expression on his face. A frown, a sigh, or even an involuntary twitch could render some suspicious because someone is almost always watching. It is a very scary idea to be smart enough to wish to think for yourself but knowing that in doing so you are signing your own death warrant. What I think may make this book resonate so much with people is that we can see this easily happening in our world.
