I'm always a little scared starting a new fantasy series (especially one that is not finished, I hate waiting for new parts of the series), but this series took away my concerns very early on. While a definite fantasy setting with a somewhat unique view on "magic", the first book in the series entertains without a huge amount of violence. Sure, there is some, but for the most part the book is about a boy trying to grow up. Excellent read. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
