Working over the past couple of years with a few children who have autism really helped me appreciate this book as well as understand the behavioral characteristics that come up with being autistic. Everyday in class, we write down the complete schedule of the day (this makes everyone a lot more calm as they know what exactly is going on), and another similarity is definitely Christopher's (the main character in the story) and the childrens' love of math. Haddon's book is a light quick read starting out as a murder - mystery and turning into Christopher uncovering many other (more important) things along the way. It's definitely a worthwhile read if you work with disabled children and would like to gain more insight as to where they're coming from (specifically autistic kids). I thought the way Haddon told the story was pretty brilliant and believable -- all the direct truths, blatant honesty, obsessions with math, etc. A fun and useful read.
I absorbed this book in 48 hours, despite all the Christmas errands and cleaning I had to do. The premise was intriguing, the characters were so real, and the emotional pull waxed and waned with different characters from year to year. One note - I had no idea it was a movie. I picked it up for the 2015 Reading Challenging from PopSugar (author's initials are DN). However, I imagined Robert Downey Jr. As Dexter. The woman? Not Anne Hathaway... Although I know Emma is supposed to be a redhead, I imagined Emma more caramel brunette.
