I came across 32 Candles totally by coincidence. Amazon recommended it and when I read the Booklist review I was intrigued by the story line about a poor African American teenager growing up in South in the 80s. Since I too grew up in the ‘80s I was especially interested by the Molly Ringwald references. I loved this book from beginning to end! Ernessa Carter really does do a great job of weaving a tale that keeps you reading. You want to know what will happen to Davie next, especially when James comes crashing back into her life. A great debut novel by a new author. In addition to a great story line this is also a great tribute to John Hughes and his movies, especially Sixteen Candles. I would love to see this book made into a movie with a cameo by Molly Ringwald.
