This book leaves me hollow inside. The cruelty of this children and the neglect and uncaring of the people around him make me feel so angry with a feeling of nostalgia.
I ended up enjoying this far more than I anticipated. The blurb does a good job describing the plot. It is a blend of the Crusades and Age of Exploration. The narrative structure is like GRRM in where each chapter is a single POV. There are alot of chapters and POVs and as a result alot of characters do not get good character development at all. However, the plot is fantastic with a surprising high body count, including major characters. There is the "no character is safe" thing going on here. Alot of the themes are religious as there is a holy war and much like Christian/Muslims during the Crusades, both sides commit atrocities in the name of God and how fear and mistrust can perpetuate an unnecessary war. If you love low magic, high character deaths, minimal romance and sailing themes then this novel is for you.
