House on Mango Street Sandra Cisneros 110pp. ISBN: 0679734775 The House on Mango Street is about Esperanza not wanting to be part of her run down neighborhood and the low expectations the world let alone her society has for her. This book is all about Esperanza finding her own identity and what she has to do so that she can get out of her neighborhood and not live a life like her mother and father. Esperanza is a girl who just wants to be accepted and have a life that other people have. For example to not have to shop at a junk store and to also not to have to go home for lunch while all the other students in her school stay there amd eat at the canteen. Esperanza is a girl who wants to get away from the segregation and the low expectations that are given to her and the whole spanish society. Esperanza is a self determined girl who wants to be able to enjoy the riches of life and not have to live up to the low epectations that the rest of the spanish society follows. She wants to be the one who breaks out and live a great life with a bright future. But she knows that she can't forget where she came from and lose the identity that was given to her by the society and the world. Sandra Cisneros did a good job showing how young children who have a rough life keep the faith or hope of possibly escaping the rough life when they get older. Cisneros did a good job by showing this through Esperanza.
there is one scene in the middle of the book that excecutes literary slapstick better than i have ever experienced... even a year after i read it, if i need to laugh i think of what janowitz was describing and i start cracking up... VERY entertaining.
Just about as perfect as a book of nonfiction can be!
