Slloowww start, jagged end in the name of trilogy. Publishers need to end this annoying trend and let a work stand for itself. Still, nice concept. If you pick it up, make sure you have the other two in the series. The pace picks up in the second and third books (The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure) and you won't want to be without them. It will be difficult to deal with the cliffhangers and multiple characters without constant access.
This is one of those cases where I feel like everyone says Desperation is better just because that's what everyone ELSE has said, so you feel compelled. It's like iPods (gag) and Hillary Clinton being evil (she's not). People just like to go with the flow of popular thought. (See The Cell for more info about group-thinking and the fun it leads to!) I liked The Regulators better between the two books sharing the same characters... although I probably liked it more because I felt like it had a certain fantasy element woven in along with the usual horror when I was reading it. Honestly, I read the pair long enough ago that I don't remember much. I do know that the movie version of Desperation was pretty well done... I just wish they'd have done The Regulators, too, while they were at it.
