an endearing group of older women in a small town
Title: The Color Purple Author: Alice Walker Pages: 304 Publisher: Published April 1st 2004 by Pocket (first published 1982) Isbn: 0671727796 (ISBN13: 9780671727796) I was completely disgusted when I first flip open the first page of The Color Puple, not because it is written in poor English with a lot of grammar errors; that only makes the plot appropriate for an uneducated black girl. However, what I found messed up is a fourteen year old’s father raping his own daughter, getting her pregnant and abusing her? What sort of story is this that makes this novel “now a Broadway musical”? I cannot understand this. I think what makes this book extraordinary is that this book tells not an ordinary story, but poignantly depicts a woman’s struggles in the worse scenarios. Not only does Celies was treated badly by her father, she is also later arranged to marry her little sister’s boyfriend, Mr.______. Although Celie gets to be away from her abusive father, she continues to be dwelled in a repressive male dominant society. The entire book shows her cowardliness, and suppressible live. It is difficult for me to say that I even enjoyed reading this book. Although this book was a dreadful read to me, however Walker makes it easy for me to read. She writes this novel based on the structure of “Dear God”, as Celie talks to a respectable spirit, searches for help. Her writing style creates an innovative tone of a young woman’s undeveloped voice; it shows that Celie is a fragile, and weak pupil. There are a lot of spelling errors in the text, Walker polishes it well to serve the purpose of an uneducated woman. I feel ambiguous on whether I dislike her writing style when I know that she did it for a reason. But most important of all, it's not her writing style that I dislike, it’s the Mr. Blank “Mr.______” that she uses in her book. Mr.______appears to be a prominent character of this book, and seeing a repeated Mr.Blank in print on several pages only bug me to stop reading. All in all, I think that I have expressed my anguish about this book well. I did not enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed my other summer readings this year. I did not like the writing style, I did not like the plot of the story, and I certainly did not like the characters. So many feminist stories have been told, and so many are very similar. Besides, in this society we lived in today (the U.S.), women are being treated equally already. I do not think that our society needs to further emphasize on the importance of being a woman anymore - but this story of a father abusing his little girl is messed up. I recommend this book to people who like to read about feminism, abusive relationships. easy-go reads, and whom enjoys the Broadway musical of The Color Purple (I wonder what the color purple signifies); I think Broadway lovers can always find something fresh in this book. Nope, I think that anyone can find this book enjoyable if they like a book.
