** spoiler alert ** Here's the thing about this book -- when I started reading it, I was consumed. I read the second, third and fourth book in quick succession, then I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth and a less than lucid understanding of what had drawn me in. The characters are poorly assembled, and that really blows. There's nothing more exciting than falling in love with a character, but there's nothing more disappointing than trying to fall in love with someone you don't know anything about. My second issue is Bella in general. I'm not a feminist by any stretch of the imagination but I can't count the number of times I wanted to reach into the book and shake her, screaming "Seriously, stop being such an innocent female!" Bella manages to make herself out to be the most inept, vaguely worthless woman in the history of the modern world. Next problem -- Edward won't have sex with her. If he would have simply said "I'm 100-ish years old, but I'd still like to wait until marriage," I would have bought it in a heartbeat. Instead, he's afraid of hurting her and we discover in the subsequent novels that he'll give in to her sexual advances only when they get married (as teenagers......). I can't help but think that this book may have been better as a single novel and not a series. I didn't get the feeling that Stephenie Meyer was really feeling the next couple books in the series, but that's just my feeling. I gave this book two stars because it was mediocre, but there's a lot to be said for having millions of followers.
