This is a Pulitzer Prize winner. It is Junot Diaz' first novel, after his collection of short stories. The setting is mostly in the Dominican Republic during the horrendous rule of Trujillo, but it also jumps from time to time to New Jersey, where the youngest generation in this family saga has grown up. Parts of it are autobiographical, and it is written in "Spanglish," mostly English with Spanish words and phrases appearing mid-sentence. That worked for me because I am fluent in Spanish, but it might throw some people. (I wrote a glossary for my book group to use). I liked the book for the unique style of writing and for the very interesting character development. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is because it didn't always keep my interest and its story line was full of harsh truths and harsh, often vulgar vernacular. But there is also some humor scattered throughout, and I learned a lot about the culture of the people of the Dominican Republic. I would recommend it to anyone who likes unusual writing. This is my first review since joining goodREADS. I think an example of a 4 star book for me would be The Secret Life of Bees, and a 5 star book would have to be up there with, Poisonwood Bible.
My favorite thing about this book is that it is written from an autistic boy's point of view. It is so interesting to see his thought processes. Yes, it is fiction, but it still gives you a little more insight to how an autistic might take what we say. The plot was pretty good, but I loved Christopher and his father, and even his selfish mother. There is quite a bit of swearing, just so you know. All around, it is a pretty fun book. (CD)
