This book pushed all my buttons--beautiful prose, incredibly authentic and complex characterization, magical realism in abundance, playful with language. And I was happy to find that it really is a lot more about the immigrant experience as opposed to a critical look at Islam. Someone else's review complained that there was too much backstory and not enough action. I love backstory, I love trying to understand motivations and reactions and perspectives. Anyway, I really enjoyed it even though it took me quite a long time to finish. I'm sure I'll be reading it again at some point.

As an OCD list fanatic, I love crossing collections and crossing off things I've done. So that's why this book is great, because I can officially say that I've been to 11 percent of the 1,000 places to see before I die (according to the authors). While it's easy to roll your eyes at obvious choices (I mean, of course the Eiffel Tower has to be in there), maybe this just means there should be a sequel called "1,000 Places You Oughta See Before You Die."

Terrific read. The last few pages describing a Brooklyn dog park are so perfect. The only reason I didn't race through this book is that my new full time job which does not allow me to use mass transit is seriously cutting into my reading time.
