What can I say? John Steinbeck seems like he's giving himself a continuous round of applause, but he's a fabulous writer. His writing is so clean and so tight; just like a new bra. It's hard to imagine the current tidy tourist spot, Monterey Bay, as a little town that thrived on a whorehouse and pickled sea creatures. You could probably make a living working at a gift shop nowadays. But not so long ago, according to Cannery Row, the beach was prime property only for drunks and sardines. This book is incredibly picturesque and lovely, but weird. It doesn't have the life lesson backing of, say, The Red Pony. But it's solid Steinbeck at his most delicious, and I enjoyed it. Here's to good writing.
This book is a masterpiece. I was amazed by the way Rowling was able to weave together a chess-like series of events and understandings to orchestrate the final thrilling scene in the book. Detractors will get bogged down in the first part of the book as Harry, Hermione, and Ron try to find their way, but I say Rowling knew what she was doing. The first part of the book sets the stage perfectly for the middle and ending. I will miss Harry!
