This book would probably have another star if I hadn't read it back-to-back with The Madonnas of Leningrad. I likened it to that book being about a young person avoiding a bear by 100 feet, and this book being about two young people poking the bear with a stick to see if he'd give them some honey. Reading this was kind of like babysitting. The heroes were fascinating, foolhardy, fearful, and, ultimately, fighting in the way that they saw fit.
