The only reason I read this book was because it was on a list of books I should have read before I went to college circa 1963, so I was a pretty sure it would bore me and reading all 521 pages would prove to be both a crime and its punishment. I WAS WRONG. While some passages were hard to get through, in general I found the story fascinating, the characters complex, and the general moral issues discussed interesting. Plus, they spend part of their time comparing Russia to France, which always equals interesting reading. That being said, I was unhappy that all the women seem to be hysterial most of the time, though the entire section where Sonia's step-mother goes insane was incredibly well-written. Either way, it was a pleasant surprise to get to the end and be sad it was over.
