Oh. My. God. I tore through this book in ONE DAY. I started reading it this morning and literally could NOT put it down. All the problems I had with being engaged by "Catching Fire" were obliterated here. This book snagged me right from page one and didn't let go until I finished. This was what I'd been looking for. The big picture. Even if we were still kept in the dark in places. Which ended up being more frustrating than suspenseful at times. And even if the way some things were handled left me disappointed. And even if we did go around killing all my favourite characters. Sigh. That said, Katniss is still not my favourite person. I mean, we saw some growth, what with the way she started realizing how everyone was playing her in some way. But that intellectual cynicism aside, I didn't really get the emotional growth that I wanted. Especially given the way things were handled with Peeta... and Gale, by extension. But again, I've made it clear since the beginning that I am not in this for the romance. Regardless. Not a perfect book, or a perfect series, but very compelling nonetheless. I'm still reeling a bit after that whirlwind. Wow.
i love reading mediocre early novels by brilliant writers; it reminds one that they weren't born masters.
