As much as I enjoy nature, I've been raised too soft and modern to do some serious "textual analysis". Wilderness is a kind of language, or song, and Leopold understands and speaks it fluently. The accumulation of his poetic observations, of tamarack and woodcock, of pines that converse gives a glimpse into this "vast and pulsing harmony-its score inscribed on a thousand hills, its notes the lives and deaths of plants and animals, its rhythms spanning the seconds and the centuries". This ability seems a rare gift and one that's even more sorely needed today.
