It seems that Bellow never went to Africa. His detailed, luscious story is almost entirely of the imagination....In it, animal life gives clarity to human life. The main character, Henderson, first struck me as a stock-type in the vein of Hemingway. But at evrey turn, this 'type' is challenged and made shadowy. Because Henderson does not know himself, there is no way to summarize him. Yet his personality becomes addictive and unforgettable. I've tried other books by Bellow and didn't like them; but this is one of the best novels I've read in a long time. It's in my top 5.
