Vianne Rocher, famous from the book and movie Chocolat, is back in a juicy thriller style adventure. Okay maybe thriller is a bit strong and not what you expect from Joanne Harris. I never did read Chocolat, I started watching the movie way back in UK with a friend but the guys came back from badminton too early and we only watched a bit. For some reason it spoiled it for reading the book, or maybe I just wasn't into reading much back then but I'm definitely going to get that one out of the library next. (once I've read the growing pile of new books on my shelf :) ). The characters are complex and so similar I struggled to keep up with p.o.v. but hey I am sleep deprived and manic with puppy at the moment! I hung in there and read as often as I could and boy am I glad I made it through to the end. I wrongly assumed there would be lots of generic descriptions about Paris, (I lived there for a year as an au-pair long time ago) but I was pleasantly surprised that the area was only described right at the end. The character descriptions are exquisite, showing you what being a parisien is like rather than describing it. It gets very dramatic towards the end and I can imagine it would make a great movie. So thumbs up for this one, now where did I put my lollipop shoes? ;)
