many literary critics have said that the birth of modern literature occurred in the pages of "to the lighthouse." i don't feel that i have read enough modern literature to make such a grand statement yet... but the statement does not surprise me at all. there just aren't words to describe the beauty and originality of this novel (or any of woolf's work, actually).
