Lucie Duff Gordon's "Letters From Egypt (1862-1869)" is the historical account this is loosely based on.
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Reading it as an adult I found it more humorous then I remember as a child. The 1907 edition which I read has stunning illustrations done by Arthur Rackham.
