There's a history of men trying to write SF with intelligent young women protagonists, following Heinlein's Podkayne of Mars. John Barnes' Orbital Resonance was another successful-ish one. Here's another. Haldeman has the same writing style, straightforward and enjoyable. But the plotting is simpler, more SF action, less character.
