I usually have a lighter fiction book going when I am redaing a heavier non fiction -- and this one counts as my fiction -- although it is historical fiction based on fact. It is a snippet of the Salem Witch trials told from one family and one child's point of view. You get the flavor of the hysteria of the time, family members and community members forced to testify against each other to save themselves - and one woman's brave stand against the untruths and injustice, although she is hanged for it. The jail scenes and tretment are horrendous and you wonder how anyone survived that. Eventually the child learns what her parents' behavior meant and how it helped her to survive
Richard Scarry is a classic, and it's nice to see nursery rhymes that haven't been dumbed down for kids. These are the originals, and they're as wonderful and the illustrations. Definitely better for preschool aged kids. We only checked it out because my toddler found it at the library and refused to put it down.
