If you love Austen and just miss an extension of the story, you might enjoy this. However don't expect the wry humor and if you've put Darcy on a pedestal, brace yourself for seeing a pretty normal gushy emotional side. But all in all it was a quick read and kind of nice break from War and Peace.
The Lost Saint by Bree Despain is the 2nd book in the Dark Divine Series about 17-yr-old Grace Divine. This book deals with the complications of the resolution at the end of book 1, and because I try my best to remain spoiler-free, I won't go into details on that. But The Lost Saint is of basically the same calliber as the first; there were parts I loved and parts I didn't. Overall, The Lost Saint gets a solid 4 on my ratings. The book started off really, really slow, and I started to get nervous. There was a lot of narration of the everyday life of Grace and her family, and I felt it was a little excessive for what was required to set the mood. But after about 50 pages...it got really, really, good! But first, the one aspect that I felt was a little awkward was the few times there were obvious good vs. evil undertones. Generally, I really like the concept of inner demons and a character's struggle to control them. However in The Lost Saint, there were a few times when this was stated a little too obviously for my taste, almost as if the book was giving a moral lesson. I prefer stories that present the problem, climax, and resolution, but then give readers room for their own interpretation as well. There was one scene where Daniel and Grace are talking, and it almost turns into a Sunday School lesson. I don't mind the message, but it was the uncharacteristic way it was delivered that bothered me. However, there is something about Grace's character that I really like. I think its the fact that she's not categorized. And she is a good, solid girl, and that it's normal! I think there are many, many girls like Grace in this world, and I'm glad they get a strong representation in these books. And in The Lost Saint, Grace shows her fiery side, and I like it! There is more action in this book, and its written really well. These were the times when the inner-demon concept worked really, really well. I think another of Despain's strong points is the mystery. I think these books are almost more paranormal mystery than paranormal romance. Her plots aren't super original or anything, but she paces them really well. There is resolution at the end of the story, but a very awesome cliffhanger, too! I would definitely recommend this to fans of YA paranormal romance. It would definitely be a good book for the young teenager, too. And I can't wait to see what color Grace's toes will be in book 3! :)
