(I won this through First Reads.) Why is it that Russell's books always perk up when a priest comes on the scene? This is a peculiar book: it's a novel, but some passages read like a biography, too aware of real history. It's about Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp, but the famous shoot-out is only alluded to as foreshadowing. If I had to guess, I'd say that Russell's goal was to portray these two larger-than-life figures as human and vulnerable, and she definitely succeeds. Russell's strength is always her characters. The story, on the other hand, meanders a bit. To really screw with your mind, read this while Emma Bull's Territory (in which Wyatt Earp is an EVIL SORCERER) is fresh in your mind. These two authors have drastically different takes on a bunch of historical figures.
I loved how the author writes in the first person and you never hear the heroine referred to by name. I also loved the movie.
