This was an excellent book, fast and easy reading. I haven't seen the movie yet, but plan to. I also like stories that are based on actual facts. Makes you feel sorry for Hanna and keep wondering why she doesn't defend herself and tell the truth, but at the end you realize pride is the key.

Ultimately, I was disappointed by this book. Some mild spoilers below, I think (though not much more than you'd get from the dust jacket). It showed great promise when I started reading it - I could see how it would be compared to The Handmaid's Tale, although the comparison meant that I went into this book with high expectations. The central mystery of the story was exposed slowly, bit by bit, which I loved. Eventually, though, it was laid bare without pomp, and I felt let down, although looking back it did serve to emphasize the alien nature of the whole theme. In fact, I felt like the emotion was oddly muted throughout the characters' adult lives, although this may have been a result of their curious upbringing and origins. I also felt like the story was building to some point that it never quite reached, like, (and excuse the lame metaphor, I've been NaNoveling all night) when you put a marshmallow in the microwave, and it inflates until you think it's going to pop, but then it just deflates back onto itself. I feel like the author could have done a lot more with the concept this novel was built around, and I would have liked to read a lot more. The most interesting (to me) questions about the whole world were never explained, and I left the book feeling frustrated that I didn't understand its world as well as I could. This is a lot of complaining, but despite all its shortcomings, it was an intersting premise and I did grow to like the characters (well, some of them, at least). I enjoyed reading it, despite my criticisms. I would recommend this to fans of dystopian literature - just don't go into it expecting the next Handmaid's Tale or 1984.
