A group of travelers in 13th century England roams about the countryside trying to escape the plague and tells each other a series of stories. Sound familiar? When editorial reviews called this book a mix of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and M. Night Shyamalan storytelling I was intrigued...it's actually a pretty apt description. Each of the travelers has a dark secret that gets revealed as the story progresses, and the tension mounts as the body count goes up. It's the kind of book that keeps you up waaaay too late at night, and then makes you want to sleep with a light on. Reader beware: Just like Chaucer, this book is written with medieval sensibility, so there's some bawdy language, matter-of-fact treatment of body parts & functions, frank discussion of sexuality, and some graphic portrayals of death. But none of this is gratuitous as it fits right into the atmosphere of the story and the mind-set of it's characters.
