4.5 Stars Hi. My name is Suz and I have a girl crush on Seanan McGuire. "Hi, Suz!" says the addicted crowd. Yeah, I know there are more just like me out there, and more waiting to happen. I don't know where to begin with An Artificial Night. I just finished it and everything I can think to say sounds frothy and effusive and all together too unbalanced. I loved this book. Talk about a fairy tale run amuck. To say it's a new take on old tales is an understatement. It's a dark, twisted, and chilling take on old tales. It's also an impressive leap forward in the maturation of several of the recurring characters. I've often complained that it seemed to me that the broken aspects of a character are bled to infinity in many UF heroines. Not so with Toby Daye. She may not always want to look at things too closely, but when the rubber hits the road she doesn't spend a lot of time in denial. I like that, and I love getting to watch her grow. I like watching the other characters grow too, and I'm so very glad that Ms. McGuire makes this maturation an important part of the story without being too preachy. I like it a lot. There are questions hovering that are infuriating. Long arc questions that are never quite said out loud. They are beginning to beckon to me, in the way a drug beckons to the addict. Just...there... Must have more...moving to book 4 now.
