I got this book at the library because I adore Shaun Tan's artwork. I knew nothing about the story, and read it for the first time with my five-year-old. We were a little surprised by the serious nature of the book, and we both found it to be a much sadder story than most children's books, but it ended up being a good tool for introducing the subject of colonization to my son. And, as always, Tan's illustrations are amazingly rich and detailed and inventive.
