This book was recommended to me by a few friends after Rena was born but I thought she was a great sleeper and I had no need for it--until we moved her into a toddler bed just before her second birthday. Suddenly she stopped sleeping through the night and tried to climb in bed with us and would not go back to sleep for hours. It also seemed to take forever to get her to sleep at night and required one parent to stay in her room every night until she fell asleep. After a few weeks of this, no one in our house was getting any sleep. I decided to give this book a try and it worked for us. We were able to solve the sleep issues very quickly. Sleeping through the night was solved in two nights by putting her right back in bed without attention. It also took one or two nights to solve the going to bed at night issues by moving her bedtime up and establishing a time limit for our bedtime routine. I liked best how the book used studies and statistics to show what sleep patterns are normal for each age; including both total hours of sleep and typical schedules. It is helpful to know what is "normal". Ryan actually had a much harder time putting Rena back in bed and hearing her cry, but the support in this book, stories, and advice finally convinced him it was worth a try. Because of the success with our first child, we started right away with our second child using most of the suggested methods and it worked very well. We were able to easily treat any sleep disorders before they got out of control. My main complaint with this book was organization. It was difficult to quickly find or reference information in the book. I wish there was an updated version with a better layout. If you decide to read this book, I would recommend skipping part one and focusing on part two which is broken down by age group. Most of the useful information in part one is repeated in part two. If you love the book, you can go back to part one. The third part can be read as needed if your child has specific difficulties. I know this approach may not work for everyone and the author can sound harsh at times, but it is worth a try if your child is having sleep disorders.
