It was strange going directly from reading Ayn Rand to Wilde, but there were some interesting parallels, a la amorality and selfishness (although in Dorian's case, narcissism is probably more apropos). It was fascinating to watch the evolution of Dorian from an innocent, naive adolescent to a completely immoral, sociopathic character. Although the ending and several points of the book are quite dark, the novel still has levity thanks to the capricious, ever-quotable Lord Henry. This book reads like poetry, and one can hardly go a page without encountering a great quote that perfectly sums up human nature and the realities of both life and of love. Once I really sat down to read this book, it was engrossing and I finished it rather quickly - there are so many turning points throughout the book that it's next to impossible to stop reading. The turning point at the end is at once expected and yet surprising, though any reader surely ponders this prospect throughout the book. I won't give any spoilers, as I hate coming across them when I've not read a book, but the denouement of this novel is stunning, tragic, and leaves the reader with much to think about. Whether to despise or feel sorry for Dorian is a question we're all left with by the end of the story.
