A well done antiwar novel that often suffers from its desire to be about something rather than tell a story. Trumbo puts forth a generally credible rendering of a man physically cut off from the world due to his participation in World War I, but he occasionally falters by making his narrator a mouthpiece for ideas rather than a fully developed character. That said, the book has some truly heartbreaking moments (Joe's last night with Kareen, the loss of his father's fishing pole, etc) and offers up some interesting notions about God and fate.
