While I liked this book quite a bit, and appreciated Waters' ability to immerse the reader in an almost-forgotten subculture, it just wasn't as compelling as I had hoped it would be after reading Tipping the Velvet. The story seemed to lag along and repeat itself, as if it were obsessing (very Victorian), but the characters weren't enough to pull you along for the ride. All in all, I did enjoy it, but not enough to reread it or throw it at strangers.
