The Last Dickens is both mystery and historical fiction, and although it moves a bit slowly as a mystery, the rich period detail and well-drawn characters (including Dickens himself) more than make up for the pace. Pearl does a nice job of weaving several threads that seem unrelated in the early chapters into a credible pay off at the end. He gets extra props from me for his postscript describing which characters and incidents in the book come from his research and which were entirely fictional.
