I find it impossible to say what makes this a great book. The fact that it is an accepted literary classic and in the "Canon" really surprises me. I love the book insanely, though, and can read it a million times. It just feels so light and "chicky" that I can't quite analyze its greatness.
Most people might focus on the ground-breaking character-- an intersex person. And his story is compelling. But what kept me glued to this book was the family story, told over three generations, leading to the birth and life of the main character. The book doesn't only deal with the complicated topic of sex/gender, it also tackles war, love, race relations, all with the same care and attention. A beautiful novel.
